tick borne disease prevention

The best possible "cure" for Tick Borne disease is PREVENTION. Apply repellant to clothing and skin. Wear light-colored clothing, long sleeves and pants. Tuck your pants into your socks. Survey your property looking for possible Tick areas and have them sprayed with pesticide.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS check for Ticks.  Make sure you check your children. Have someone do a "quick tick check" then take a shower. Pay attention to areas where Ticks like to feed. Areas where the skin is thin and blood vessels are close to the skin's surface (scalp, around ears, underarms, pelvic area, legs, between fingers and toes). If you find a Tick remove it quickly before it has a chance to embed itself into the skin and start feeding.

If you find an embedded Tick:

  • Remove it using fine-tipped tweezers. Grab the Tick as close to the skin as possible to remove the entire Tick (head and body). Pull straight up.

  • Do not squash, burn, smother the Tick with Vaseline or use your fingers to remove an embedded Tick. You can rupture the Tick's body and get pathogens on your skin or force the Tick to regurgitate its stomach contents into your blood.

  • Have the Tick tested - follow the link for labs that do Tick TESTING>>

  • See a Lyme Literate doctor (LLMD) to get the proper treatment. The longer a Tick is embedded the higher the risk of infection. Follow the link to find doctors using the ILADS LLMD REFERRAL SERVICE>>

Make sure you check your pets for Ticks.
